An Introduction to Wenwang Gua

 

Wenwang Gua is a classical method of Yijing divination that allows you to look beyond the surface meaning of a hexagram and examine the forces at work within it.

 

Through the Five Phases, Six Relations, Stems and Branches, Self and Other lines, moving lines and other structural layers, the reading becomes increasingly precise. You begin to see what is strong or weak, what supports or obstructs a situation, how different influences relate to one another, and how a situation may develop through time. 

 

This traineeship was created to make this method accessible without simplifying its depth. Across 10 online lessons, Johannes Bloemsma and Harmen Mesker guide you step by step through the foundations and practical application of Wenwang Gua, drawing directly from the classical Chinese sources while continually working with interpretation and real cases. 

 

A new lesson is released each week, but there is no need to complete the training within ten weeks. The lessons remain available, allowing you to study, practise and return to the material in your own time.

Why learn Wenwang Gua?

 

Wenwang Gua adds a second level of precision to the Yijing. Instead of reading the hexagram only through its trigrams, lines and imagery, you learn to examine the relationships and forces operating within it. Four of the essential layers are:

五行 · Wuxing · The Five Phases 

The Five Phases show how different forces support, control, strengthen or weaken one another, giving each hexagram a dynamic internal structure.

六親 · Liuqin · The Six Relations 

The Six Relations give the lines specific roles within the reading and help reveal what each part of the hexagram represents in relation to the question.

03.

干支 · Ganzhi · The Stems and Branches

The Stems and Branches connect the reading to time. They help determine when a force is strong, weak, supported, challenged or likely to become active.

04.

世應 · Shi/Ying · Self and Other Lines

The Self and Other lines establish the central relationship within the reading: the person or subject being examined and the force, person or situation they are facing.

Together, these layers allow you to read not only what a hexagram means, but how the forces within it interact, where the tension lies, and how the situation may develop through time.

The Wenwang Gua Training — 10 Lessons*

Each lesson includes video teachings, workbooks and practical exercises. You can study at your own pace and bring your own questions and cases into the course as your understanding of Wenwang Gua develops.

 

 

 

*Important: This training assumes a basic understanding of the Yijing. You should already be familiar with casting a hexagram and with the basic meanings of the eight trigrams.

Meet the Teachers Behind the Course

Johannes Bloemsma

 Founder Nourishing Destiny Academy

Johannes Bloemsma is the founder of the Nourishing Destiny Academy and developer of the ND Model™. He teaches internationally and works with students, private clients and professional groups around the world. His work brings together the Yijing, Nine Star Ki and Wenwang Gua, with a particular focus on recognising the deeper patterns and structures that connect different areas of a human life. 

 

As a teacher, Johannes is known for making complex systems clear, practical and directly applicable. Within the Wenwang Gua training, he focuses on helping students move beyond the basic meaning of a hexagram and learn to read the relationships between its lines, elements, timing and underlying forces. He also leads the live Q&A sessions and works with students on questions and real cases from their own practice.

Harmen Mesker

Founder of the Yijing Research Centre · Research & Course Development

Harmen Mesker has studied and taught the Yijing for more than four decades. His work is rooted in close study of the classical Chinese sources, with particular attention to the language, history and structural development of the Book of Changes. 

 

As a researcher and teacher, Harmen is known for returning to the original texts and examining how later methods and interpretations developed from them. His approach combines detailed textual research with a deep understanding of the structures and systems surrounding the Yijing. He teaches throughout the Wenwang Gua training and appears together with Johannes in all recorded lesson videos, bringing his extensive knowledge of the historical sources and technical foundations of Wenwang Gua directly into the course.

 

His current focus is on research and further course development, while Johannes leads the live Q&A sessions and student guidance.
